Lachin: The Cultural Capital

The liberated city of Lachin has been declared the "cultural capital" of the CIS. This is incredibly joyous news. I believe there's no need for a detailed explanation of the significance of one of our regions, which remained under Armenian occupation for 28 years, now becoming a central figure in the cultural policies of nine states that were once part of the USSR. Considering that one of the CIS members is Armenia, the very country that occupied Lachin in 1992, this decision clearly sends a strong message to Yerevan. Let's outline the dividends this decision will bring to Azerbaijan in 10 key points:

International recognition: Lachin’s designation as the cultural capital of the CIS will enhance global recognition of Eastern Zangezur, helping to reestablish the region, once frequently referred to internationally as a “corridor,” as purely Azerbaijani territory.

Increased political significance of the liberated territories: This cultural capital status will reinforce the political significance of our liberated lands both nationally and internationally.

Support for the reconstruction process in Karabakh: This status accelerates the reconstruction process for the city’s infrastructure and economy while revitalizing its social and cultural life. The rebuilding and revitalization efforts, as part of the return to Lachin, will also receive a cultural boost.

International display of armenian occupation’s consequences: During the occupation, Armenian forces destroyed villages, settlements, and cultural monuments. The attention Lachin will receive provides an effective platform to showcase these acts of vandalism to the international community.

Cultural diplomacy: Lachin’s selection as the cultural capital of the CIS strengthens Azerbaijan’s “soft power” and cultural diplomacy, offering new opportunities for collaboration and cultural exchange against the backdrop of Armenian occupation.

Preservation of historical and cultural heritage: Lachin is a cradle of ancient Azerbaijani culture, and this status will be a significant step toward the restoration and international recognition of its cultural heritage. Notably, the Albanian temples in Lachin never underwent Armenianization and have reached us as a part of the Albanian legacy. This fact plays a crucial role in exposing Armenia's fabricated history in the South Caucasus.

Organization of cultural events: International festivals, concerts, and conferences will be held in the cultural capital, fostering intercultural dialogue.

Promotion of multiculturalism and ethnic diversity: Before the occupation, several villages in Lachin were home to ethnic Kurds who suffered alongside the local population and gave their lives for Azerbaijan in the wars. Therefore, this region plays a vital role in promoting multiculturalism and ethnic diversity, showcasing Azerbaijan's tradition of tolerance.

Tourism development: Lachin is already an attractive destination for domestic tourism. Becoming the cultural capital will further enhance the city’s tourism potential, creating new economic opportunities.

Highlighting environmental Issues: During the occupation, not only was Lachin’s social infrastructure devastated, but its ecological system was also severely damaged. Forests were destroyed, and natural resources were exploited. The status of Lachin as a cultural capital is crucial for raising international awareness of these environmental issues and attracting global attention to the restoration process.
